Fluffy American Biscuits
Ingredients:
2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup (115g) cold unsalted butter, cubed
¾ cup (180ml) buttermilk (cold)
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
Instructions:
1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
3. Add Butter: Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or rub it in with your fingers until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
4. Add Buttermilk: Gradually pour in the cold buttermilk, stirring gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
5. Shape the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Gently pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Fold it over itself a few times to create layers.
6. Cut the Biscuits: Use a round cutter (or a glass) to cut out biscuits. Place them close together on the baking sheet.
7. Bake: Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown on top.
8. Serve Warm: Brush with melted butter and enjoy with jam, honey, or gravy!
