Ingredients:
- 1 pound (approximately 450 grams) fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 12 ladyfingers (approximately half a standard package)
- 1 pint (approximately 475 milliliters) strawberry or vanilla ice cream, softened
- Fresh strawberries, halved, for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Strawberry Mixture:
- In a medium bowl, combine the sliced strawberries, granulated sugar, and lemon juice. Stir gently to mix. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes, allowing the strawberries to release their natural juices.
- Whip the Cream:
- In a separate bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. This means the cream should hold its shape but have a slightly droopy peak when the beaters are lifted.
- Assemble the Trifle:
- Line a standard loaf pan with plastic wrap, leaving extra hanging over the sides to aid in easy removal later.
- Spread a thin layer of the whipped cream at the bottom of the pan.
- Arrange a layer of ladyfingers over the whipped cream, trimming them if necessary to fit snugly.
- Spoon half of the macerated strawberries over the ladyfingers, ensuring an even distribution.
- Spread half of the softened ice cream over the strawberries, smoothing it out with a spatula.
- Repeat the layers: whipped cream, ladyfingers, remaining strawberries, and the remaining ice cream as the final layer.
- Freeze:
- Cover the assembled trifle with the overhanging plastic wrap or an additional piece if needed. Place the pan in the freezer for at least 4 hours or until firm.
- Serve:
- When ready to serve, remove the trifle from the freezer and let it sit for a few minutes to soften slightly.
- Using the plastic wrap, lift the trifle out of the pan and transfer it to a serving platter.
- Garnish with fresh strawberry halves if desired. Slice and serve immediately.
