Italian Beef Meatball Sandwich Rolls Recipe

Ingredients

For the Meatballs:

1 lb (450g) ground beef

½ cup breadcrumbs

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

½ tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

2 tbsp milk

1 tbsp olive oil (for frying)

For the Sauce:

1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 tbsp tomato paste

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

½ tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

1 tbsp olive oil

For the Sandwich Rolls:

4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 tbsp butter (optional, for toasting)

Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Meatballs

1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and milk.

2. Shape into small meatballs (about 1 inch in diameter).

3. Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry meatballs until browned on all sides (about 6-8 minutes).

4. Remove from pan and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

1. In the same pan, add olive oil and sauté onions until soft.

2. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.

4. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, then add meatballs. Cook for another 10 minutes until meatballs are fully cooked.

Step 3: Assemble the Sandwich Rolls

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

2. Slice hoagie rolls in half and lightly toast them (optional).

3. Place meatballs with sauce inside each roll.

4. Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top.

5. Bake for 5-7 minutes or until cheese melts.

Step 4: Serve and Enjoy

Garnish with fresh basil or parsley.

Serve hot with extra sauce on the side.
